History

T.H. Shevchenko National University "Chernihiv Colehium" is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the Chernihiv region.

Its pedigree dates back to Chernihiv Collegium, founded in 1700 on the model of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The Collegium played an important role in the formation of higher pedagogical education on the northern Left Bank of Ukraine.

The pedagogical ideas of its founders L. Baranovych, I. Maksymovych, A. Stakhovsky, and            I. Galyatovsky entered the treasury of pedagogical thought and laid the foundations of higher education. In 1786, the Collegium was reorganized into a seminary, which, like its predecessor, continued to train teachers. New socio-economic conditions and cultural demands of society led in the early XX century. to a significant restructuring of the system of pedagogical education. The Teachers' Institute (1916) took over the baton in teacher training. The newly established educational institution inherited a unique library of a theological seminary. In addition, the most experienced seminary teachers continued to work within its walls.

In 1919, the Teachers' Institute made its first graduation and was reorganized into a pedagogical one with a four-year term of study.

And in subsequent years, depending on the tasks facing society and the school, the institute was repeatedly reorganized (Institute of Public Education - 1920, Institute of Social Education - 1930, Pedagogical - 1933, Teacher - 1935, United Teachers and pedagogical - 1939). In 1954, by decision of the Board of the Ministry of Education of the USSR, it was reorganized into a pedagogical school and operated until March 13, 1998, until it was granted a new status of the Taras Shevchenko Chernihiv State Pedagogical University. In January 2010, taking into account the national and international recognition of the results of the University, its significant contribution to the development of national education and science was noted and President Victor Yushchenko issued a decree granting national status to Taras Shevchenko Chernihiv State Pedagogical University. On October 4, 2017, by the decree of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, the university was renamed into the T.H. Shevchenko National University

"Chernihiv Colehium".
